CFAD 92.1 FM, Salmo BC: “Salmo Community Radio Local News/Public Affairs Forum” $4,700 The Project is aimed at developing a local news and community interest program to be aired weekly as part of CFAD’s regular broadcasting schedule. It will involve training a small team of volunteers who have expressed an interest in developing this type of programming. The resulting program will provide a weekly platform from which local news items can be reported on and discussed, as well as a forum for community members to engage in conversation and idea sharing with regard to public affairs, community projects, civic planning, and government issues.
CFUV 101.9 FM, Victoria BC: “Women's Collective Coordinator - Summer Position” $2,970 The goal of this project is to expand the training and recruitment arms of CFUV's Women's Collective to more quickly integrate women volunteers into the training process and to outreach in particular to young women in high schools. The Women's Collective Coordinator's job will be to help in this recruitment, training and empowerment of female volunteers. The Coordinator will organize monthly meetings for the Women's Collective, including those that help produce the weekly Public Affairs program "Women On Air" and the women-in-music program "Big Broadcast". She will also be focused on areas of outreach and recruitment, including visiting local high schools. She will train interested women volunteers not only in the basics of broadcast equipment but also audio-editing software, interviews, and production.
CHLS 100.5 FM, Lillooet BC: “Radio Legends” $9,750 Radio Lillooet will train two youth in the production of new St'at'imc radio plays, other historical monologues, and current news, so that the stories, history and news of the community can be are shared with a wider audience. The Radio Legends project will cover historical and current events told from the people who experienced them.
CHOQ 105.1 FM, Toronto ON: “Dossiers Choq” $7,350 CHOQ FM will produce 30-minute reports designed to inform and question the community on local interest topics which stimulate public curiosity and in relation to which products, services, and news networks are available in Toronto. These "CHOQ-ing Reports" are part of an open content community education initiative designed to inform listeners, foster their critical judgement, and prompt them to action. Both content and form will be drawn up so as to gently question commonly accepted truths. The reports will deal with topics related to local and Toronto-specific realities in a tone that will be alternately humorous, satirical, sarcastic, or diplomatic.
CIVR 103.5 FM, Yellowknife NT: “Recueillir et diffuser l'information locale, territorial” $10,000 Radio Taïga will hire a full time Francophone reporter to open a window on the Francophone community activities in Yellowknife. The reporter will inform listeners of various activities and cover local and territorial events.
CJAI 92.1 FM, Stella ON: “Local Oral History Broadcast Project” $2,320 CJAI FM will record a new series of remembrances specifically for radio broadcast, and make copies of these broadcasts available for listening in its Alternative Library in the station. They will make copies of these broadcasts for the local primary school library, where grades K-8 will be able to use these for research into the future. They will catalogue and transcribe the contents of these interviews, which will be attached to the audio files. They will provide copies to the local history museum and the County Archives.
CKBN 90.5 FM, Wôlinak QC: “Culture rurale” $9,600 CKBN FM will produce a program on the cultural relationship between humans and the land. The program will consist of chronicles featuring those involved in the agricultural world. There will also be interviews with men and women from the agricultural sector, thematic vignettes, as well as scientific reports and agricultural press reviews.
CKOA 89.7 FM, Glace Bay NS: “The Celtic Connection Documentary Series” $10,000 The goal of this program is to develop a series of one-hour radio programs to showcase the Celtic connection between the Cape Breton community and the countries of Scotland & Ireland, while training and mentoring two individuals. This documentary style radio program will primarily consist of spoken word. Interviews will be conducted on a wide range of topics including how Cape Breton has been able to maintain its' musical connections with the past including interviews with local historians and musicians who've been able to continue to perform music passed down from their Scottish & Irish ancestors. It will also look at how Cape Breton is working to preserve the Gaelic language. There will also be a focus on unique Celtic attractions on the island including the Gaelic College in St. Ann's, The Celtic Music Interpretive Centre in Judique, the Highland Village in Iona, and of course the Celtic Colours International Festival with it's many Celtic workshops, seminars & concerts.
CKUT 90.3 FM, Montréal QC: “Training Track at June 2009 NCRC” $8,650 CKUT FM will subsidize bilingual, hands-on radio technical production workshops at this year's National Campus and Community Radio Conference (NCRC), supporting the training and development of campus-community radio talent from across Canada. The Training Track workshops include: Remote Broadcasting, Creating Radio Art with Womyn, Documentary Production, Uploading and Archiving on the Internet, and Production and Planning for a National Aboriginal Day Broadcast. By the end of the conference, participants will have produced 2 live remote broadcasts, 4 radio sound art shorts, one radio documentary, and content for the National Aboriginal Day broadcast - all of which will be made available and archived on the NCRA Programming Exchange. Marginalized delegates will receive subsidies for conference fees, travel costs, and studio and equipment rentals.
CKUW 95.9 FM, Winnipeg MB: “The Winnipeg Files training/production module of Green Planet Monitor” $5,000 A team of CKUW producer/interns -- ranging in skill from novice to advanced -- will develop and assemble a dozen or more documentaries/dispatches for Season Three of the Green Planet Monitor (GPM) audiocasting project. These stories will tackle the GPM's global environment and development agenda from a Winnipeg perspective -- reporting from Winnipeg streets, offices, schools and homes. They will be posted individually at www.greenplanetmonitor.net, and incorporated into GPM Three's two dozen half-hour podcast editions, which CKUW will broadcast. Producer/interns will be guided through their audio production work by GPM Creative Producer Dave Kattenburg (Earth Chronicle Productions). A series of workshops and continuous one-on-one mentoring will accompany the production process.
NCRA (national): “GroundWire Community News Network Capacity Improvement” $8,500 This project will increase the frequency and quality of GroundWire, a national collaborative news program made up of contributions of local news from programmers throughout the NCRA membership. GroundWire is a 29-minute news radio program featuring headlines, reports and features from the community radio sector in Canada. The program aims to be a strong, reliable, high-quality newscast, engaging the audience with geographically and culturally diverse features that address issues of interest to specific communities as well as to a national audience. Eight bi-weekly 29-minute GroundWire programs will be created by the end of this project timeline.
Youth Internship Program – Spring 2009
CFRG 93.1 FM, Gravelbourg SK: “Stage radiophonique pour un jeune” $8,000 CFRG FM will offer a radio internship session to a young Canadian aged between 16 and 30 wishing to start a radio career. At the end of the internship, the intern will also be asked to produce a series of radio programs on the Francophone musicians of his/her community. This series will comprise biographies and interviews of these musicians and will feature their music.
CFRO 102.7 FM, Vancouver BC: “Aboriginal Language Learning Programming Mentorship” $10,000 Vancouver Co-op Radio will provide radio training and mentorship opportunities for two aboriginal youth by engaging them in the project of producing a live, weekly program about aboriginal language learning. We hope that involving aboriginal youth in this project will not only provide them with concrete media skills that are transferable to other areas of their life, but it will also provide them with a direct connection to the languages and stories of their people.
CHES 101.5 FM, Erin ON: “EDHS Partnership” $10,000 The EDCHS Partnership is designed to create a meaningful and lasting partnership between Erin Radio and the Erin and District Composite High School and will develop programs and systems to incorporate radio broadcasting in the Communication Technology courses at the high school, set-up student run radio programs that will be broadcast both within the school and on Erin Radio, and to set up radio training opportunities for the students at EDHS.
CHLI 101.1 FM, Rossland BC: “Be The Voice” $9,960 Rossland Radio Cooperative will create a youth internship program called "Be The Voice." This program will seek to work with youth in search of mentorship, education, and training in broadcasting within community radio. "Be the Voice" will expose youth to the roles of operations within a community radio station. It will allow the station to develop and engage a school outreach-marketing plan that can be used annually, as well as to create and initiate a recruiting and training program that is created by youth for youth.
CJPN 90.5 FM, Fredericton NB: “Jeunesse radiophonique” $7,500 Radio-Fredericton will provide training to youths attending 2 eighth-grade classes at l’École Ste-Anne-de-Fredericton. This 4-week project is part of an overall mandate to promote the inclusion of youth within Francophone media. The students will acquire four basic skills: speech abilities, knowledge of Francophone music and culture, research and interview techniques, and radio programming. Underlying this projet is the mandate to promote individual and collective pride in mastering the French language through participation in the project and eventually through the production of programs that will be aired in the community.
CJRG 94.5 FM, Gaspé QC: “La tournée régionale” $9,160 CJRG FM will invite young communications and/or media technology students to take part in an internship designed to complete their training under the supervision of the station's programming and newscasting managers. By the end of the internship, the students will be able to produce and air interviews from which newscasts and audio clips will be derived. Priority will be given to local and regional news.
CKDU 88.1 FM, Halifax NS: “Youth Now Radio” $10,000 CKDU FM will seek eight internships for the production of Youth Now Radio. Youth Now Radio is produced weekly out of CKDU’s Community Campus radio station at Dalhousie University. Youth Now Radio is focused on the voices of youth talking about their issues, in their voices, in their way. Each participant produces a segment for the show. They identify an issue, theme, idea, a local story, or event that has impacted them. Then, working with CKDU staff and show host Sobaz Benjamin, they will produce a 20-30 minute segment around this topic.
CKJM 106.1 FM, Chéticamp NS: “Formation de jeunes pour la relève” $5,000 CKJM FM will train a young university student in radio programming to work during the Christmas holidays and summer vacations. The training of youth is expected to enrich our programming with new dynamics. Furthermore, this young person may later train and supervise other students who will become volunteers.
CKRH 98.5 FM, Halifax NS: “Drive Home Host Project” $10,000 This project will enable the radio station to provide the French community in Halifax a drive home show featuring local news and information that is relevant to its listenership. The drive home is a highly tuned-in moment for many radio stations. Being able to offer a comprehensive show will also contribute to increase advertising opportunities for the station.
